Unleash Your Feedback Potential By Dan Lohrmann and Bikash Barai

Post-exercise evaluation is a critical component of any tabletop exercise or simulation. Whether termed as a "hot wash" or conducted through surveys, soliciting feedback allows organizations to glean insights, identify areas for improvement, and foster innovation. In this discussion, we explore the significance of post-exercise evaluation and its role in stimulating critical thinking and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

Here is the verbatim discussion:

I talked about the hot wash in my example a little bit a few minutes ago. Whether you call it a hot wash, whether you call it feedback, maybe you do it in a survey. We do this with customer service all the time and other types of things like that. What did you think was reasonable? What could we have done better next time? What, you know, and you get some pretty sophisticated answers from some executives, you know, around. You know, it gets them thinking. It gets  them thinking outside the box. It changes things up from their normal environment. I've even seen people say, and this is another little side tip, don't do, don't do, you know, go to, you know, go to an off site, go somewhere else.

Highlights:

Various Feedback Mechanisms: Post-exercise evaluation can take various forms, including hot wash sessions, surveys, or structured feedback sessions. Drawing parallels to customer service practices, organizations can leverage feedback mechanisms to gather insights and perspectives from participants.

Promoting Critical Thinking: Encouraging participants to reflect on their experiences and provide feedback stimulates critical thinking and innovation. By asking questions such as "What could we have done better?" or "What innovative approaches could be explored next time?", organizations foster a culture of continuous improvement and creativity.

Thinking Outside the Box: Post-exercise evaluation sessions provide an opportunity for executives and participants to think outside the box and challenge conventional approaches. By stepping out of their normal environment, individuals are prompted to consider alternative perspectives and solutions, leading to enhanced preparedness and resilience.

Off-Site Evaluation: Conducting post-exercise evaluations off-site can further enhance the effectiveness of the process. Removing participants from their usual surroundings fosters a conducive environment for open discussion, brainstorming, and collaboration, facilitating deeper insights and innovative ideas.

Post-exercise evaluation is a vital component of tabletop exercises, enabling organizations to gather valuable feedback, stimulate critical thinking, and foster innovation. By soliciting insights from participants through various feedback mechanisms and encouraging reflection, organizations can identify areas for improvement and enhance their preparedness for future scenarios. Moreover, conducting evaluations off-site can further elevate the effectiveness of the process, creating an environment conducive to open discussion and creative problem-solving. Through continuous evaluation and improvement, organizations can strengthen their resilience and adaptability in the face of evolving challenges.
